THIS PROMO HAS ENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Melissa C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/08075160469523960783noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5823428416074889358.post-7347700365183230282013-03-08T12:15:00.001-08:002013-03-09T18:25:10.181-08:00App of the WeekI am so excited to share this incredible, life changing app! Okay, it may not be life changing in a big picture kind of way- but I think it will be in your classroom when it comes to organization. Have you ever been jealous of your media specialist’s organization and efficiency when it comes to keeping track of book inventories? Well, I have!
I have an extensive classroom library that I am quite proud of and I am very efficient when it comes to organizing my books. I have got that part down! But so many times, my students are “borrowing” books from my library to take home or keep them in their cubbies or colleagues are asking to borrow books.
Enter, Book Crawler! Where were you 10 years ago? This app will help you get a handle on your books. You can use it for your classroom library and professional library. How many times have you let a fellow teacher borrow a book to run a few copies and then it just disappears? Or you couldn’t remember where you put that great resource on fables that you and your team need for an upcoming unit you are teaching? This app will answer those questions for you!

Once you purchase this app- yes, it costs $1.99 {well worth it!} you will be able to start taking inventory on your books.
This app has some really great features. You have 3 options for loading books {Manually, Google Books and ISBN scanner}. The scanner is the easiest and most time efficient way, but Google Books works great, too!
After you load your book, you can tag it. This allows you to sort your books into categories. This is a great feature! I have my classroom library Lexile Leveled instead of by “theme” to better meet the needs of my students{Go here to find my Lexile Level resources on TPT} So, if I was looking for books on volcanoes I would have to search through all my baskets. Now I can look for books that have a Science tag and find which titles I have. I can also add the Lexile Level as a custom tag and find exactly which basket houses the book.
There is also a comment option. You can put whatever you want in there. If you lend a book to a student, parent or colleague you can enter it in the comment! Genius! There are so many other great features to this app that I haven’t even figured out yet.
If you decide to check out this app (there is a free lite option), let me know how it goes. Feel free to share any tips you may figure out! I love finding any excuse to get technology in the hands of my students.
Have you ever tried to use QR Codes in your classroom? They are a great tool and so easy to make.

First, you need to go to a site that generates the QR code for you. Try this one:

http://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/

Follow the easy directions to create and download your own unique codes. The best part- it is free!

Then, you will need to have a QR Reader loaded on your devices. These are also free!

In no time at all you, too, can be making your own QR Codes. In the mean time, why not grab my free St. Patty's Day Riddles QR Code Cards and let your kids have a hand at using them. Click on the picture below to download. Please leave me a vote in exchange!

I have a personal goal set for the month of February that I am oh so close to meeting (I mean less than $10.00). It is one that I never thought I would come close to a year or so ago when I joined TPT. I would love if you could take a moment and browse my store where everything is now 20% off!! This is a great time to get something off of your wishlist and into your classroom!
I know that March officially starts tomorrow, but I am going to give myself this whole weekend to reach my goal!
Thanks,
I know it is hard to believe (especially in the Midwest where temps have reached almost 60 degrees!). It is time for pink, red, flowers and lace. It is time for candy conversation hearts and valentines. My students have always enjoyed celebrating Valentine’s Day- no matter what their age. For the past few years I have had them create their own Valentine’s Day Box to house the cards they exchange with each other on that special day. Last year I had the boxes on display in the morning and had my students fill out ballots to vote on the boxes. Then, while they were at their special class, I tallied the results and filled out an award for each student. Here are a few of the cute and clever boxes my students came up with last year.

About a week before Valentine’s Day, I send home my letter to parents that explains the project. Most students use a shoe box, but as you can see from the picture, some go a little larger! After purchasing some adorable hearts graphics and pretty valentine paper I have revamped my certificates for this year and have them available for purchase in my TPT store. Here’s an example of one:

My set includes 24 custom awards, 1 blank award to customize, class ballot forms, a letter to send home that describes the project and candy heart number cards to put on each box for voting. The set will be revised each year with the proper date. Check it out!
Okay, so we have a 10 foot ceiling in our family room so I was thinking big on Sunday when we went to get our downstairs tree. We bought this tree when it was all wrapped up, so we couldn't really judge how massive it really is! This tree was one pain in the butt after another. First, my husband went ahead and brought it in the house and placed it in the stand while I was grocery shopping with our youngest. After Sunday dinner, we started to put Christmas ornaments on (luckily we have an obscene amount of ornaments!) The tree began to tip as I was hanging an ornament. So I had to stand there holding the tree up while we tried to come up with a solution to keep it from crashing down. Seriously, is there a squirrel living in this thing!!

So here we have our beautiful tree tied up with string. We tied the other side as well. I filled the tree stand to the brim with water and we called it a night.

A lightbulb went off in our heads....maybe we need a different tree stand! So my husband went out to get one after work today. I don't even know how to describe the difficulty we went through pulling the tree out of the old stand, lights and all to get it in the new one. Plus, the dang thing is almost to the ceiling which doesn't leave much room to maneuver!!

So, we got to put our ornaments on together for a second time tonight. You can see my husband had to cut some of the bottom branches off to fit the tree in the taller tree stand. Oh well, imperfections are what makes life worth living! We still have some more ornaments to put up this weekend!
Two groups have already made it to their second chapter book. The conversations I am "eavesdropping" on are so rich! I am loving the insights that they are making about their books.
Today I have a copy of my schedule/lesson plan for you to take a look at. I hope you find it helpful if you are planning or thinking about starting book clubs in your classroom.
I was so looking forward to doing something a little different to end the school year with my great group of thirdies. They have become more and more independent- so instead of our guided reading groups I decided to tackle book clubs.

Well, in short, we are LOVING it! I redid all my groups based on our spring MAP reading data ( we took the test last week). I have 5 groups of 4 students each. This seems to be the perfect number for our book discussions.

We have three rotations of 20 minutes each. Each group meets 2 days a week. The other two days they are involved in centers. One rotation is dedicated to responding to the text and the other rotation is dedicated to reading the required text for their next meeting.

So far, so good! I absolutely love the way my groups are working together. One student is the facilitator (each will get a turn) for the meetings. I dubbed them the team leader. All five of them have done a fabulous job this week.

If you want to know more about how I do my reading group rotations go to my previous post.

I can’t wait to see what next week brings!
Melissa C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/08075160469523960783noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5823428416074889358.post-43877696991607555852012-03-26T17:22:00.003-07:002012-03-26T17:25:09.565-07:00Post-it Freebie

We have been reviewing fact and opinion. This week in guided reading groups, I had my students look for facts and opinions in their leveled readers. They marked some examples with my fact and opinion post-it strips. Then we wrapped up our session with a share-out. Click on the above picture to get a copy of my fact & opinion post-it strips. If you have never printed your own post-its before it is simple! Follow these steps:

1. Print the document normally on your printer.

2. Lay a clean white sheet of paper over the printed document and lay a 3 by 3 post-it over each printed area.

3. Feed the paper through your printer upside down and top first (this works for most printers).

4. I have never had a jam! (knock on wood!!)

Don't forget to cut the post-its into strips!! Have fun!
Melissa C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/08075160469523960783noreply@blogger.com0
